Whatever happened to the two-door car?
  + stars: | 2024-04-20 | by ( Peter Valdes-Dapena | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
There are still two-door cars today, of course, but they’re almost all high-performance sports cars not intended for comfortable cruising. For car designers, two-door models can offer more striking proportions to play with, long hoods that evoke power and tapered, aerodynamic back ends. Today, it’s rare to see a two-door car that isn’t a performance model like the Mustang or Corvette. Today, if you have a two-door car and you have kids, you also have a backache. While some two-door cars used to be bargain items – the cheapest entry-level cars were almost always two-door hatchbacks – today two-door models are seen mostly in European luxury car showrooms.

DETROIT – General Motors is changing its product lineup strategy to include plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, CEO Mary Barra told investors Tuesday. More companies are reconsidering the viability of hybrid vehicles to appease consumer demand and avoid costly penalties related to those federal fuel economy and emissions standards. Most of GM's main competitors offer traditional hybrids as well as plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. The only hybrid GM currently offers in the U.S. is a traditional hybrid version of the Chevrolet Corvette. GM led the way for plug-in electric vehicles with the Chevrolet Volt during the 2010s.

Vernon, New Jersey CNN —General Motors is very clear that its engineers didn’t create the Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray, the first hybrid Corvette, to save gas. Instead they wanted to make an all-wheel-drive Corvette, and the best way to do that was simply to attach a powerful electric motor to the front wheels. Unlike in a Toyota Prius, or almost any other hybrid, the E-Ray’s electric motor almost never drives the car on its own. For that, GM offers the lighter and more powerful Corvette Z06, with its high-revving 670-horsepower V8 and no electric motor. Instead, GM has focused on fully electric technology and, before too long, there will be a fully electric Corvette.

Sales of traditional hybrid electric vehicles, or HEVs, such as the Toyota Prius, are outpacing those of all-electric vehicles in 2023, according to Edmunds. Sales of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, or PHEVs, accounted for only 1% of U.S. sales through November. In comparison, Ford's EV sales are up 16.2% to roughly 62,500 units, accounting for 3.5% of its total sales. Battery breakdown Both hybrids and plug-in hybrids have a traditional engine combined with EV technologies. The world's largest automaker is considered the pioneer of traditional hybrids, with the Prius.

"Hybrid is a great alternative to a pure electric vehicle (and) it's an easier sell to a lot of customers." Interest in hybrids is rebounding as consumer demand for pure electrics has not accelerated as quickly as expected. Sales of pure electrics will claim about 37%, leaving combustion vehicles — including so-called “mild” hybrids — with a nearly 40% share. In addition to new pure electric models coming soon, "we are very bullish on hybrids going forward," a spokesperson said. Hyundai and sister brand Kia offer seven hybrid models, with Ford and Lincoln six.

Jan Hyde , 82, a retired real-estate investment banker and consultant, on his 1960 Chevrolet Corvette, as told to A.J. If I had to argue one reason why the Chevrolet Corvette exists on this planet, it would be racing. When I was growing up in Pittsburgh, there was a wealthy Gulf Oil executive named Grady Davis who started a Corvette racing team around 1961. He had two noteworthy drivers: a Washington, D.C.-based racer named Dr. Dick Thompson (they called him “The Flying Dentist”) and a guy named Don Yenko , who owned a Chevrolet dealership outside my hometown called Yenko Chevrolet.

Suppliers familiar with GM's production plans through 2025 support the notion the automaker continues to slow-walk electric vehicle investment and output while it continues to bank money from its big combustion-engine pickups and SUVs. GM on Tuesday stuck to its plan to produce a total of 400,000 electric vehicles for North America from 2022 through the first half of 2024. GM said it has secured all the battery materials it will need to build 1 million EVs a year in North America by 2025. In the short run, GM's go-slow approach could allow it to side-step the price war that Tesla launched earlier this month. The division has 90,000 reservations for the high-performance Hummer EVs and is sold out into next year, he said.
The Detroit automaker had discontinued all hybrids, including plug-in hybrids, to focus investment on all-electric vehicles. The 2024 Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray can go from zero to 60 mph in 2.5 seconds, about 0.1 second faster than the 2023 Corvette Z06. The first gas-electric hybrid Corvette will also be the fastest version of the American sports car, General Motors Co. said Tuesday. The Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray will start at just over $104,000 and go on sale later this year, 70 years after the first Corvette was unveiled.
CNN —Exactly 70 years after the very first Chevrolet Corvette was unveiled in January, 1953, General Motors revealed the first Corvette with an electric motor on Tuesday. The Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray is 3.6 inches wider than the base model. General MotorsUnlike some other high-performance hybrid cars, the Corvette E-ray is not a plug-in hybrid. A button inside the cabin of the Corvette E-Ray changes how the car’s electric motor is used. While fuel economy is secondary to performance in the Corvette E-Ray, it is expected to be more efficient than other Corvette models.

GM Had a Good Quarter, but It’s Next Year That Counts

General Motors Tuesday reported better-than-expected profits for the third quarter and confirmed its prior outlook for the full year. Detroit’s profit engine is still humming, but investors are waiting for the great reset. General Motors on Tuesday reported better-than-expected profits for the third quarter and, more importantly, confirmed its prior outlook for the full year. This came as a relief after a poor second quarter, when the company left more than 90,000 vehicles unfinished in inventories for want of semiconductors and other components. Also, Ford warned last month that it was experiencing similar problems in the third quarter.
Automakers are also investing capital in off-road models and electric vehicles. "In the transition to electric vehicles, and where do automakers put their development money, it just isn't going to convertibles." Even counting those vehicles, sales last year were down by 26% since 2015. Jim Owens, head of Ford Mustang marketing, said only about 15% of the car's sales to consumers — 72,500 units in 2019 — are convertibles. Could we see a possible convertible electric Challenger in the future?

As a symbol of leisure and fun, some history's iconic models were convertibles, such as the Chevrolet Corvette and the Ford Mustang. However, convertibles have been steadily losing popularity among car buyers and make up only 0.46% of new car sales in 2021. Buyers value practicality and functionality over looks and leisure, leading their interests elsewhere. Can the iconic design stand the test of time?
CNN —General Motors will produce a fully electric Chevrolet Corvette, GM President Mark Reuss announced in a LinkedIn post Monday morning. Reuss didn’t say when the electric Corvette would come, but he hinted that a hybrid model could come relatively soon. An accompanying video the company posted to Twitter showed what appeared to be a hybrid Corvette, and in another first, showed the front wheels spinning and throwing snow as if being powered. A 670 horsepower Corvette Z06 with a 5.5-liter V8 was unveiled last fall. Reuss has previously implied a hybrid Corvette was possible.

As the US now claims the world's largest coronavirus outbreak, passing China and Italy on March 26, novelty "museum deliveries" of the new mid-engine Chevy Corvette continue. The $995 optional delivery is done at the Corvette Museum in Kentucky, where buyers get a guided tour and their car put on display, rather than just picking it up at a dealership. The National Corvette Museum. But the museum stayed open to private visitors, like the customers picking up the new C8 Corvette through GM's "R8C" delivery option. Now, they're back home, while the coronavirus rages on — just like the Corvette deliveries.
